LEED GREEN BUILDING CERTIFICATIONS

While every LEED-certified building must meet list of criteria in order to achieve a targeted rating, there are several areas of focus for building owners, developers, and engineers when seeking LEED certification. These are:

1.    Location and Transportation.
2.    Sustainable Sites.
3.    Water Efficiency.
4.    Energy Use
5.    Materials and Resources
6.    Indoor Environmental Quality
7.    Innovation

Of which, three categories that rise to the level of importance for us at Environmental Controls Corporation are, Energy usage, Indoor Environmental Quality and Innovation.

Energy Use.

There are three methods Developers/Owners/Engineering teams use to optimize a building’s energy use after determining the type of building envelope.  By focusing on the internal energy use intensity (EUI), the design team can then set about reducing the temperature fluctuations, which has an enormous impact on energy use. The first step is to  “custom design” the HVAC system for the building envelope. The second step is the use of renewables such as solar panels, wind turbines, and geothermal systems. The final step is energy storage.  This step is often used in conjunction with renewable energy systems. Building owners can substantially reduce their operational budgets by embracing renewables for their buildings. Utilizing proper design philosophies, in conjunction with Environmental Controls Corporations vast experience in implementing Energy Efficiency Measures such as LEED or Net Zero, will help owners to achieve their desired sustainable goals for their projects.

Indoor Environmental Quality.

This category addresses environmental factors such as air quality, lighting quality, and user control of interior spaces, which all affect the way people learn, work, and live inside of buildings. By providing natural light levels for regularly occupied rooms and spaces that are thermally pleasant, whereby, building efficiency and occupant comfort both increases. We at Environmental Controls Corporation can be that interface where technology, in conjunction with generally accepted energy policy and your sustainable goals, intersect.  By utilizing the latest BMS controls technologies and systems, we can help you on your path toward a sustainable future.

Innovation.

This last category challenges designers to think outside the “box” of LEED and to push the envelope when it comes to sustainable design. As our climate becomes less predictable, we enhance our built environments with newer technologies that evolve from our learnt experiences. Buildings will have to be designed differently from what they used to, a decade or so ago. Efficient buildings are no longer a wish list item. They are here to stay.  It’s important for Building owners, Designers, and Engineers to stay up to date on the latest research and continue to learn in order to meet the energy challenges of the future. By working with Environmental Controls Corporation, you can expect innovative ideas based on our experience to draw out workable solutions that can further enhance your building’s efficiency, sustainability and visibility.
